WHO DO YOU TRUST?

WHO DO YOU TRUST?

How blessed is the man who has made the Lord his trust. (Psalm 40:4)

There are two categories of people in the world: those who trust God and those who do not. Faith means to believe, to depend upon, to rely on, to look to.

You can check your trust level by answering one simple question: How much do you pray? If you can go a day, a week, or a year without ever really praying, it’s a clear indication that you think you can handle life yourself. That you feel you don’t need God. That you are trusting in yourself and your own resources. This decision is fatal.

The Psalmist, in Psalm 40, reminds us of the many reasons we can trust God.

HE CAN DO ANYTHING

Many, O Lord my God, are the wonders which You have done. (Vs. 5a)

God is limitless in His capacity and power. No one else can provide and protect as He. He alone created the world and all that is in it. Can He not take care of you? Why would you look anywhere else for what only He can provide?

HE IS THINKING ABOUT US AND HAS PLANS FOR US

Your thoughts toward us, there is none to compare with You. (Vs. 5b)

God is thinking about you. This is one of the most striking realities. We are sinful and broken and have failed the Lord repeatedly. But we are in His mind like a perfect Father thinks of his prodigal. And He has plans for us that are good and not evil all the days of our life. No one is more perfectly concerned for us than God.

HE LOVES US

You, O LORD, will not withhold Your compassion from me. (Vs. 11a)

God is perfect in compassion, and He does not withhold that love from us. The reason He does what He does toward us is because He is what He is.

HIS TRUTH AND LOVINGKINDNESS SAVE US

Your lovingkindness and Your truth will continually preserve me. (Vs. 11b)

The world around us (and the Devil who rules it) is filled with lies. God is truth, and that truth is what preserves us. He is not only loving but is kind, and this lovingkindness keeps watch over us. This couplet of His character—truth and kindness—protects us.

HE ALONE CAN DELIVER AND HELP US

Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me. Make haste, O LORD, to help me. (Vs. 13)

No one can save us from ourselves and the onslaught of the world’s vain philosophies and the attack of our enemy. God is our only Savior. He alone can help us in the way that we most desperately need it.

All these reasons and a thousand more are why the Psalmist proclaimed his joy in following God. In trusting Him and obeying Him. Trusting God was not a duty for him but a delight.

I delight to do Your will, O my God. Your Law is within my heart. (Vs. 8)

The greatest among us and the most blessed are those who understand the character of our great God and gladly, continually trust Him.

The worst evaluation that could be given of true believers is that they are “walking like mere men.” True believers are Spirit-men. Human, yes, but humans in whom Christ dwells.
