The Impossibility of Prayerless Bible Study

January 06, 2016

Psalm 119 is, in reality, one long prayer to God about the blessing, and study, and obedience to God through His Word. The writer is praying deeply and specifically, as he approaches God's Word. We should do the same.

It is impossible to understand God's Word without God's help! And just as understanding is impossible without God, so is obedience. We need HIM and so everyday we should come to God's Word with humble dependency, expressed in prayer.

Look at the PRAYERS and some of the PURPOSES/END RESULTS of the PRAYERS in Psalm 119:33-40.

PRAYER: vs. 33: Teach me…the way of Your statutes

PURPOSE: …and I shall observe it to the end

PRAYER: vs. 34: Give me understanding

PURPOSE: …that I may observe Your law and keep it with all my heart

PRAYER: vs. 35: Make me walk in the path of Your commandments vs. 36: Incline my heart to Your testimonies and not to dishonest gain Vs. 37: turn away my eyes from looking at vanity

PURPOSE: …and revive me in Your ways

PRAYER: vs. 38: establish Your word to Your servant

PURPOSE: vs. 38: as that which produces reverence for You

The Bible is like no other book. It is alive because the Author is right beside us (within us actually), explaining and empowering us to live it out by His grace! Prayer and the Word are so synonymous that you cannot do one without the other. Bible reading is, in reality, nothing more nor less than communion with God and this communion changes our lives forever!

To resist anywhere is to restrict everywhere. One private closet, one unsurrendered plot of ground, gives the devil a foothold he doesn’t deserve but will use to maximum advantage. This is why God is in the continual process with His children of helping them relax their hands on the whole.
