RIGHTLY ALIGNED COURAGE

Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and may the Lord do what is good in His sight.” (2 Samuel 10:12)

The world takes notice of courageous leaders. The war in Ukraine is led by a man (President Zelensky) who has become a recognized leader precisely because of his unselfish, but persistent convictions. The Ukrainian people are winning battles that, on paper, they should not be winning. Their leader is courageous, and it is inspiring them to be the same.

A RIGHT MOTIVATION

King David’s general, Joab, was such a man. At a time of battle, he issued a charge to his men that showed the stuff he was made of. He called his men to “Be strong and let us show ourselves courageous” in the face of a great enemy. But notice why … “For the sake of our people and for the cities of our God.”

His motivation was not for himself. Not for self-glory or a notch on his gun. Joab led with courage for the highest purpose. God honored this desire with a great victory.

A DETERMINED TRUST

Joab also put his trust in God. “May the Lord do what is good in His sight.” In other words, Joab was saying, “We’re going to move forward as God directs and move boldly. But we’re trusting in God to intervene and accomplish His will.” And He did.

As you survey the landscape of your life today, where do you need to be strong and courageous? A tough decision? Raising your children? Handling a prodigal child? Facing your fears at work? Pressing through in a relationship to do the right thing? And where do you need to move forward, trusting in our Great Warrior-King to win the day for His glory and the lives of people?

Father, thank You that we can do all things through You as You strengthen us. Give us the grace to follow You courageously and to give You all the glory at the end of the day.

MERE MEN
MERE MEN

The worst evaluation that could be given of true believers is that they are “walking like mere men.” True believers are Spirit-men. Human, yes, but humans in whom Christ dwells. We have everything we need in us, and our lives are to be lived by trusting Him to live through us … giving us His understanding, supplying us with His character, directing us with His perfect guidance
