GOD IS SPEAKING

God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days, has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. (Hebrews 1:1-2)

For someone to speak to you means they long to communicate with you. Usually, it indicates they desire to understand you better, to be involved in your life; to know you and let you know them.

GOD’S CHOICE

God doesn’t have to speak. He created us and could do with us whatever He desires. But one of the most astonishing truths of the Scripture is that God longs to communicate with us constantly. Therefore, He speaks. And not only does He speak, He speaks “to us.” He does this through creation (see Psalm 19 for instance), through His Word and by His Spirit, and most beautifully and fully, He has spoken to us in His Son.

If a salesman calls you randomly, you may ignore what they are saying. Who is speaking determines the depth of your attention. To help us understand the magnitude of this Voice, God describes whom He has spoken through.

HE HAS SPOKEN TO US IN HIS SON

Hebrews tells us who this One is who is speaking. This is He who ...

Owns Everything

Whom He appointed heir of all things (vs. 2)

If the wealthiest person in the world called you, you would pay attention. You would know that they could help you. You would honor them for the fact that they had attained such riches and hold such great possessions. The One who speaks to you right now is the One who holds the stars in His hands. Who owns everything. And He is not miserly. He is perfectly generous and makes His followers “heirs and joint-heirs” with Him (Romans 8:17).

Made Everything

Through whom also He made the world (vs. 2)

If the creator of the largest company in the world called you, you would do well to pay attention. You would want to learn how they accomplished this incredible feat. How they attained such power, and how they keep everything under control. You would want to listen and be astounded that they were interested in talking to you.

The Son made the world. The entire universe was spoken into existence simply by His words! He not only owns all possessions, He has all power in heaven and earth and He is constantly addressing His creation. He speaks to us, and the One who speaks Has all ability. Can you imagine how small your problems seem to this Creator? He has told us to worry about nothing, for He feeds the sparrows and clothes the lilies, and He can take care of us.

Displays Everything

And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature (vs. 3)

If you want to know God, listen to His Son. He is one with God, and therefore, He constantly radiates God’s glory and perfectly represents God’s nature. Jesus is not sub-God; He IS God. To talk to Him is to speak to God Himself. Father, Son, and Spirit are eternally and perfectly one.

Upholds Everything

And upholds all things by the word of His power (vs. 3)

In Christ, we live and move and have our being. There is no force stronger, no authority more complete. If the One who speaks upholds all things, can He not uphold you? Is He not faithful and completely able to lift you, sustain you, confirm you, and establish you throughout your life and beyond?

Saves Everything

When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high and He has inherited a more excellent name than they. (vs. 3-4)

All of us have fallen. Our sin has separated us from God. But Christ has come, living a sinless life, dying a sacrificial life, and rising a victorious Savior. He saves all who believe. He purifies us so entirely that we can now have peace facing God.

Because of this, God has “highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the Name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11).

If you’re doubting God’s interest and love for you today, remember this: He has gone to extraordinary lengths just to speak with you! And He spoke (and is speaking) to you in the perfect way through the perfect Voice.

This is why the writer of Hebrews gives us this profound admonition.

LISTEN TO EVERYTHING!

For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. (Hebrews 2:1)

If God is speaking and is speaking through His Son, how could we turn a deaf ear? Disregard the Speaking Voice? Pay no attention to His blessed communication. Ignore a single word? How could we not read His word (His primary means of communication to us)? Listen to His Spirit (who is has placed inside of all believers so that we might “freely know the things given to us by God”)? Go days and months without prayer?

God’s choice to communicate with us is stunning and humbling. It destroys forever the lie whispered incessantly in our ear by our great enemy, that God is terribly distant and does not care.

The Father, Son, and Spirit are speaking. Are we listening?
