During my current sabbatical, I am asking the Lord to give me fresh Biblical promises for each of my children and their spouses. He has already begun to answer that prayer. I believe this will allow me to pray in greater faith, which could help them each greatly.
I learned this from my mother, who had promises for each of her children. Those promises have been fulfilled in our lives, in amazing specificity. Mom believed in this process (praying by God's promises), right up to her death.
A TESTIMONY
Around 1984 (30 years ago) my pastor-Dad suffered a terrible moral fall. It rocked our world for several years. At the end of the ordeal, he left my mom, married another woman and moved away. We thought it was the last we would ever see of him.
My mother, before she died two years later, got a biblical promise from the Lord. She prayed it and believed God on behalf of my dad until the day she died. Here was the promise:
“Because he has loved Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name. He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With a long life I will satisfy him and let him see My salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16)
Five weeks before my mother died, my dad came to a full and complete repentance. Although he couldn't return to be her husband, he did return fully to the Lord. His confession was as public as his sin. He stood in the pulpit of almost every church he had pastored and asked for their forgiveness. Since then, God has mightily used my dad with thousands of pastors warning and instructing them that (as he says), ""No man can rise so high that he cannot fall; and no man can fall so low that he cannot rise by the grace of God!""
This October 3, 2014 he will celebrate his 97th birthday. I believe God has fulfilled His promise.
There are over 7,000 promises in the Bible! Three on each page. It seems that this is one of the premier ways God intends to operate with us. They are given to us to believe. What God did for my sweet, gracious South Arkansas Mom, he will do for you. Believe him on behalf of others. He's faithful.
